Creating Coloring Pages

Introduction to Creating Coloring Pages

The Kea Coloring Book uses vector bases SVG files for its coloring pages. This enables the pages to be scaled largely without loss of quality. It does however mean that creating the coloring pages does require an understanding of the underlying structure and certain level of proficiency with the graphics tools involved.

We are happy to assist you in creating coloring pages from scratch or from existing images. Fees will apply.

If you choose to create your own coloring pages, then it is recommended that you read and understand the documentation on this site. We are able to provide a certain amount of assistance, but if excessive time is involved we will need to charge you for our time.

Understanding how Coloring Pages work

Before creating any coloring pages you should read the Understanding Coloring Pages article. This article discusses the underlying structure of the coloring pages. Unless you understand the structure, you may waste a lot of time creating a coloring page that looks fine, but cannot be used in the Kea Coloring Book.

Tools - We recommend Inkscape

For creating coloring pages we strongly recommend Inkscape. Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X. It can be downloaded from http://www.inkscape.org/.

Some users report instability under Vista. If you are using Vista we recommend that you save often to avoid losing work.

Other tools like Adobe Illustrator, can export to SVG, but the files tend to be bloated, and often use features not supported in the Kea Coloring Book.
